Leading Universities in China: How International Students Should Compare Them
A global ranking can identify research visibility, but it cannot tell you whether an international student can enter a specific 2026 program, study in the required language, afford the full cost, or obtain the needed visa documents.
This guide compares six prominent institutions by their practical fit. Most 2026 entry deadlines have passed as of August 2026, so prospective applicants should use the next intake's official guide when it is published.
Tsinghua University
Tsinghua is a comprehensive research university in Beijing with major strengths across engineering, science, technology, public policy, management, and other fields.
Its official undergraduate page says international students can enter through divisions and complete general study before confirming a specific major in many cases. Teaching can involve Chinese and English, but applicants must verify the language for the exact division and curriculum.
Tsinghua's 2026 graduate admissions materials listed more than 30 programs fully taught in English, alongside Chinese and bilingual options. Graduate applicants should use the program catalog, not assume that a department's research website means its degree is available in English.
Best fit: students with a strong academic record who can identify a precise division or graduate program and meet its language, examination, and document requirements.
Peking University
Peking University, or PKU, is a broad research university in Beijing with humanities, social sciences, science, medicine, and professional fields.
The 2026 undergraduate entrance examination route for international students included Chinese, English, and mathematics in the preliminary examination. This is an important correction to articles that imply international undergraduate admission is always an English document-only process.
PKU also has program-specific graduate and international routes. Requirements vary by school, so use the International Students Division and the relevant department.
Best fit: applicants whose academic plan matches a specific PKU program and who can satisfy the stated language and examination process.
Fudan University
Fudan is a comprehensive research university in Shanghai. Its official 2026 international admissions pages listed Chinese taught programs and a defined group of English taught undergraduate options, including international organizations and global governance, economics, financial technology, data science, and MBBS.
That does not mean every Fudan undergraduate degree is taught in English. Fudan's own FAQ says most programs use Chinese, with selected English options at undergraduate and graduate levels.
Dorm rooms are limited and require a separate reservation process. Applicants should not treat admission as a housing guarantee.
Best fit: students seeking Shanghai and a currently listed English or Chinese taught program with clearly published requirements.
Zhejiang University
Zhejiang University is a comprehensive research university based in Hangzhou, with multiple campuses and international programs.
Its 2026 undergraduate guide said programs were generally taught in Chinese, with some English taught options. It also required a valid China Scholastic Competency Assessment, or CSCA, report for international undergraduate applicants beginning with the 2026 to 2027 academic year.
The official catalog, campus, language, and fee should be checked together. An English taught program on the Haining International Campus creates a different daily experience from a program elsewhere in Hangzhou.
Best fit: students who value a broad research university and can match the program language, campus, CSCA subjects, and admissions schedule.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Shanghai Jiao Tong University, or SJTU, is a major research university in Shanghai with engineering, science, medicine, business, and other fields.
The university publishes international degree options in both English and Chinese. Applicants should use the current program page and 2026 or later admission guide for language evidence, academic prerequisites, expected graduation documents, fees, and campus.
Joint institutes and specialized programs can have separate tuition, curriculum, admissions, and degree arrangements. Verify the awarding institution and recognition.
Best fit: students seeking a specific technical, scientific, business, or interdisciplinary program in Shanghai.
Beijing Language and Culture University
Beijing Language and Culture University, or BLCU, is particularly relevant for Chinese language, linguistics, translation, teaching Chinese, and related cultural study.
It should not be compared with comprehensive research universities only by an overall ranking. A specialist institution can be a stronger fit for intensive Mandarin or language-focused study.
BLCU's official admission guidance says that international undergraduate applicants from fall 2026 must submit CSCA results as part of the application. Language program and nondegree requirements can differ.
Best fit: students whose main goal is Chinese language or a closely related field.
Do not compare these universities with one number
Use a table of evidence:
| Factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Program | Exact title, curriculum, campus, and awarding institution |
| Language | Teaching, assessment, thesis, laboratory, and administration |
| Admission | Current intake guide, tests, prerequisites, and document authentication |
| Cost | Tuition, mandatory fees, housing, insurance, and deposits |
| Scholarship | Eligible program, application route, coverage, and renewal |
| Housing | Guarantee, application, campus, room, and vacation access |
| Career | Internship authorization, language needs, and degree recognition |
| Support | International office, health, disability, and emergency services |
Chinese or English taught?
English taught programs are real but limited and unevenly distributed. Ask for the 2026 or next-intake course list. Some electives, placements, or daily services may use Chinese.
Chinese taught degrees use institution-specific Chinese proficiency and sometimes examinations. The required level for admission may not be enough for comfortable academic writing.
Costs and scholarships
Do not copy tuition from an old comparison article. Fudan's 2026 English undergraduate catalog alone showed large differences between programs and warned that final tuition would be confirmed at registration.
Request the current official fee sheet and add housing, insurance, visa documents, travel, food, transport, books, and emergencies.
Chinese Government Scholarships, university awards, and local scholarships have separate eligibility and coverage. Read the China scholarship guide.
Visa and housing
China uses X1 for study exceeding 180 days and X2 for study of 180 days or less. X1 holders apply for a residence permit after entry. Admission is not the same as visa approval.
Ask whether university housing is guaranteed, competitive, or unavailable. Private housing must support accommodation registration. Read the China student visa guide and China housing guide.
